NEWS RELEASE

The city of Oxford will dedicate its new city hall and community center on Thursday, August 26th at 3:00 pm followed by an open house reception until 6:00 pm. Mayor Jerry Roseberry said members of the Oxford city council and Oxford employees will be present to welcome guests.  The architect firm of Carter Watkins and the general contractor, Garrard Construction, will have representatives present.

The Italianate Gothic Style building with 8,400 square feet will house city administration offices and public space. An open foyer containing art gallery space is on the first floor and leads to the City Clerk’s office where a walkup window is provided for customer service.  Second floor space also includes art gallery space along with the mayor’s office and police administration and a small conference room.

Some green features of the building include pervious paving in the parking areas, a storm water retention storage system for irrigation, cool roof, R40 attic insulation and R19 wall insulation. Windows are high performance thermal with operable shading. Low VOC paints were used along with recycled carpet and wood products from certified forests.

Spacious Council Chambers on the first floor will also serve as the Courtroom and Community Center. The community room is available for meetings and private parties. A schedule of rental rates will be available from the city clerk’s office.

Safely dispose of paints and old electronic devices - fans, heaters, computers, radios, etc. FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH, 8:00-12:00 a.m. at Recycling Center, Newton County Landfill, south bypass road (off of Highway 36, past Indian Creek schools)

ANOTHER SECTION OF TRAIL SYSTEM IS NOW OPEN!

A second section of walking/biking trail is now open in Oxford, from West Clark Street to Moore Street, connecting with the trail behind Old Church which runs from Soule to West Clark. The Newton Trail/Path Foundation built the trail with generous donations of land from private citizens, land easements from Oxford College, and financial contributions from Oxford College, the City of Oxford, and a number of citizen donors. DONATIONS FOR TRAIL ARE STILL BEING ACCEPTED! A donation sufficient to build an 8' by 8' section of trail entitles the donor to an engraved brick on that section.
