Dedication of Oxford’s New City Hall and Community Center

Citizens of Oxford,

Two years ago the City of Oxford announced plans to construct a new city hall and community center. Today that dream is a reality due in no small measure to the assistance received from Oxford citizens, many serving on the Tree Board and the Planning Commission.

Oxford employees also played an important role in the process. City Clerk Carol Poole and Deputy Clerk Lauran Willis spend many hours in getting the interior space just right. Superintendent Jody Reid and his men assisted the utilities and grounds contractors.

All members of the city council participated but the heavy lifting went to Jim Windham and Terry Smith. Jim served as the city’s project manager and spent hundreds of hours on this project.

The Oxford Planning Commission assisted the city council in locating an architectural firm with experience in designing a first quality facility for a city the size of Oxford. The architectural firm of Carter Watkins was selected. When the project design was posted twenty-eight bids were received. Garrard Construction of Lawrenceville was chosen. Today we are happy to announce that both Carter Watkins and Garrard Construction have met our expectations for a job well done.

On August 26, 2010 the new city hall and community center was dedicated in honor of all the citizens of Oxford, past, present and future. An open house celebration followed the dedication and was well attended by citizens, county commissioners, mayors from Newton County and elsewhere, and representatives from the Georgia Municipal Association and the Municipal Electric Association of Georgia.

This beautiful facility belongs to you, the citizens of Oxford, and I hope you will use it and also attend meetings of the City Council, Planning Commission, Tree Board and special events. Please contact city hall for rental rates and permitted activities.

Sincerely,

Jerry Roseberry, Mayor

New City Hall and Community Center

MAYOR’S WORD

August 21, 2010

Thursday, August 26, 2010, will mark a historic day in the city of Oxford. On that day we will dedicate the new City Hall and Community Center. The dedication ceremony will take place at 3:00 pm and the Open House will follow until 6:00 pm. I hope you will attend and as you tour the interior pay special attention to the Community Center Room. It has seating capacity for up to 98 persons and will be available for citizen use for meetings and special celebrations. The room will also serve as the city’s courtroom and council chambers.

As you walk about the grounds you will notice the rain garden which is part of the storm water control system. Buried in the ground is a water retention tank that will provide irrigation for plant life. Notice the parking areas have a different surface from the driving area. The surface is pervious, meaning water will go through the paving into the ground. These are just some of the green aspects of the building and grounds.

The city staff will move into the building the week of August 30 and we ask for your patience during the move. Police and other emergency services will not be affected during the transition.

Sincerely,

Jerry Roseberry

Mayor

Flag Day 2009

Flag Day is June 14 and everyone is encouraged to fly the American Flag. If you have an old flag that needs to be retired it may be taken to the Oxford City Hall where it will be held for proper disposal by the Oxford Boy Scouts.

Tree-Care Education is Easy!

"Tree-care education is easy in Oxford! The Georgia Urban Forestry Council awarded the City of Oxford a grant this year. This project funds, among other events, tree-care education for all of Oxford’s citizens, the Oxford College community, and City and College maintenance staffs. All are enthusiastically invited to the education sessions for which we now have instructors and dates in 2009.

Saturday, February 21 from 10:00am to noon will be Oxford’s Arbor Day celebration in the George St. Park. Connie Head and Beryl Budd will conduct an open education session on tree benefits, urban forest planning, and planting, among the many Arbor Day festivities. Saturday, April 18 from 9:00 to noon in the Community Room (by the fire station) will be a second open education session on tree pruning and care. All local citizens and the general Oxford College community are invited to these open sessions. The second session is meant as a continuation of the first. Everyone is encouraged to attend these informative sessions and rare opportunities for furthering knowledge about tree benefits and tree care. We are lucky to have excellent instructors on a topic so vital to the health of our community, and we hope everyone will take advantage of these one-time, grant-funded opportunities. All are warmly invited to attend.

Connie Head and Beryl Budd will also conduct two education sessions exclusively for city and campus maintenance staffs on Friday, February 20 from 9am-noon and Friday, April 17 from 9am to noon."
