Weekly Update 10/26/2012

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

→ Allen Memorial Church – Our electric crew replaced the electric meter at the
-
church last week.  The old meter had not been working and needed to be replaced.

The overflow line from our water tank has been eroding the side of the hill.  We

placed some additional rip rap in the outfall line Tuesday and will repair some of the

concrete later (probably next week).  The tank overflows as the Newton County Water

and Sewer Authority increases the water pressure.  The Water and Sewer Authority is

installing a new control system, so the tank has been overflowing a little more lately, but

     that should settle down soon.

Utility and Maintenance Department – Our contractor, Marable Pirkle, has changed out nine
-
poles this week. This will finish the fifteen pole change out project.  Our crew repaired

a water service leak at 85 Perry Circle; installed security lights in the mulched area

at city hall; and placed rip rap at the water tank on Watson Street. We set

poles on Fletcher Street for the Fletcher street lighting project.  Jody will attend the

Georgia Rural Water Association conference the first part of next week.

New Police Officer  - Chief Harvey has completed his review and we have hired a new
-
police officer.  Officer Eric Almond will report for duty on Friday, November 2.  He will

normally work the 6 pm until 2 am shift.  Chief Harvey reports:

“After careful consideration and extensive background checks on the

applicants for the police officer position, I have chosen Eric Almond.

Officer Almond has worked with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department

for over five years as a detention officer; City of Covington Police for

9 ½ years; and was previously employed with Georgia Perimeter College Police

until accepting the position with Oxford Police. Officer Almond has both

Intermediate and Advance Certifications; S.W.A.T. Certification; Laser and

Radar Certification, Intox Certification; and Bicycle Certification. Officer

Almond received Employee of the Quarter four times at the Covington Police

Department. Office Almond also received the Meritorious Service Award at

Covington Police for the apprehension of armed robbers. Officer Almond

was also the Honor Guard Commander with Covington Police. I have heard very

positive comments regarding Officer Almond from his former chief, supervisor,

several deputies, and officers from the Covington Police Department. I feel

Officer Almond will be a great asset to the police department and the City of

Oxford.”

New Copier – The new copier arrived in the City Clerk’s office on Wednesday. It makes

both color and black & white copies and the scanner function is very fast compared to desktop

scanners. We can scan at the copier and email it directly to our desks. The copier is

connected to our network, so long documents can be printed straight to the copier from our

    desktops.
