Weekly Update 07/17/2014

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Moore Street Water Line – Based on the direction we received at the City Council meeting Monday night, Jody and I have worked with Jason Anderson of Anderson Grading and Pipeline to issue a purchase order for the water line on Moore Street. The job is now 3,880 feet of pipe. The original quote was for $98,607 for 1,660 feet. We went through four proposals and finally received a proposal for $199,994.50. We have issued a purchase order extending the unit prices from Anderson Grading’s bid for the Emory and Asbury Road projects. We will get a construction schedule soon. We are coordinating this with Oxford College’s project to construct a sidewalk along a portion of Moore Street. First, the water line, and then the sidewalk.

Annual Walking Trails Inspection – - If you were out and about Wednesday morning, you might've seen me and Florian Pohl riding the walking trails on the city's golf cart. Our new agreement with Newton County trails requires an annual inspection. Florian and I made the inspection together. I drove and he took notes so we will get a summary of the inspection soon. We covered the entire walking trail and some of it twice.

Dustin James – No, you’re not seeing things. This is a picture of Dustin (and Scottie) at work for the city on Thursday, July 10, 2014 on a water leak near the new Fleming Hall on the Oxford College campus. Dustin changed his mind and asked to return to City of Oxford employment. Based on his work ethic, and what he learned in the year with us, Jody and I were glad to have him back. You can’t see much from the picture except that he quickly got into muddy water almost up to his waist.

West Soule Street – Newton County's work crew was finishing the final coat on resurfacing West Soule St., Friday morning. They were working under the expert supervision of Mr. JP Godfrey. The County has done a very good job resurfacing both West Soule and Moore Street.

GMA Retirement Briefing – Randy Logan with GMA will attend the August 18 work session to brief City Council on our two retirement systems. He was already booked for the July meeting so we have scheduled him for August. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about our retirement systems that I can send to him in advance.

Reminder – I will be attending the MEAG annual meeting next week Monday through Wednesday. I will be in touch with cell phone and email and report when I get back on MEAG’s plans for the recently announced EPA requirements for the reduction of carbon dioxide. This particularly affects our two coal-fired plants.
