Weekly Update 7/5/2013

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Traffic Ticket Statistics – For the June 27 court date we had 27 tickets in the 35 MPH zone.

The average speed was 54 MPH with the highest speed being 59 MPH. In the 25 MPH zone

we had 18 tickets with an average speed of 46.2 MPH. The high speed was 56 MPH – that’s

    31 miles over the limit!

→ Honorary Councilmember – Our Honorary Councilmember for August is Mrs. Shirley Ross

of Oxford Way. She was appointed by Councilmember David Eady. Her tour will be Monday,

July 8. Dave and I will pick her up for lunch at Newton Medical Center (where she works) at

noon, go to lunch, and then bring her back to city hall. She will visit with the police department,

then with the Clerk’s office and then with Jody and public works. Either Jody or I will drive her

back to work by 3 PM.

Police Department– We are halfway through the calendar year. Chief Harvey has reviewed

the results for the police department through June 30.

o According to our totals for June 2013, we had one less call than last June. We wrote 18 more

citations this June compared to last June and our arrests remained the same at 3.

o Our year to date for June 2013 compared to June 2012 shows a decrease of 116 in calls, an

increase of 186 in citations, and an increase of 7 in arrests.

o The yearly totals show a total of 1170 calls in 2012 and 512 so far in 2013. Citations in 2012

totaled 378 and we are already at 367 so far this year. Total arrests for 2012 were 34 and we

are at 20 for 2013 so far. o The county has answered 25 less calls for us this year so far than

last year at this time. I attribute this to officers working until 1200 midnight and 0200 hours

now that we are fully staffed with four officers.
